Salma Abou Hussein works as a Project Officer at the Population Council, Cairo office, where she is actively engaged in gender-related research. She leads a DFID-funded project titled "Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) Research Programme" in Egypt which aims to address knowledge gaps relating to the status of FGM/C in Egypt and provide evidence on the most effective approaches to ending this human rights violation. Salma also works on higher education policies with a focus on accessibility and equal opportunities. She has been conducting a series of qualitative studies over the last four years on socio-economic and gender disparities prevalent in accessing public universities in Egypt. She has previously consulted for various international organizations, including the British Council and the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), where she provided research or technical support on gender-based violence issues. Prior to that, Salma worked as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program Coordinator at Apache Corp where she monitored the performance of girl-friendly community schools across Egypt. Salma is currently the Giza Hub Curator of the Global Shapers Community (GSC), an initiative of the World Economic Forum (WEF). She received her Master's degree in Social Development Practice from University College London (UCL) and holds a Bachelors degree in Mass Communication from the American University in Cairo (AUC).
