Gesine Weber is a fellow on GMF’s Geostrategy team. She works on European security and defense issues, and focuses on Europe’s role as a geopolitical actor, EU defense initiatives, and security and defense policy of the E3. Currently a Visiting Scholar at the Saltzman Institute for War and Peace Studies of Columbia University, Gesine leads her own research project "Towards a Geopolitical Europe?", assessing European approaches towards the Indo-Pacific in the context of US-China competition. She also pursues PhD research at the Defence Studies Department of King's College London.
Gesine has work experience as a defense policy adviser in the German parliament and as a consultant for the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation in Shanghai. She is also an Associate Researcher at the European Council on Foreign Relations.
Gesine is regularly published and a frequent commentator in European and international media, including the BBC, RFI, LCI, or Deutsche Welle. She holds an M.A. in European Affairs from SciencesPo Paris, an M.A. in Political Science from Freie Universität Berlin, and studied Mandarin Chinese at the Beijing Foreign Studies University.
