Agnes Venema is a Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher on the European Joint Doctorate grant “Evolving Security SciencE through Networked Technologies, Information policy And Law” (ESSENTIAL). Her PhD is on Intelligence and National Security, specifically on the deployment of new technologies used for the identification of people in crowded spaces. She conducts her research at the “Mihai Viteazul” National Intelligence Academy (MVNIA) in Bucharest, Romania and at the Department of Information Policy and Governance at the University of Malta.
As part of her doctoral studies, Agnes Venema has guest lectured at the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and has presented her research internationally. Furthermore, she has supported research for various projects at MVNIA, including for the Security in the Black Sea Region 2018 conference, a Hybrid Threats project, and for the International Association for Intelligence Education 2019 conference, where she also served as a panel chair.
Prior to starting her doctoral studies, Agnes Venema worked on various issues related to international security, including at the University of Essex and for various NGOs. She also worked on Security Sector Reform at the UN Mission in Timor-Leste and participated in election monitoring for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
